China Correspondent

We're looking for a China correspondent to report on the region for all Guardian platforms, including daily news and analysis, news features, financial news, multi-media material, and material for non-news sections as required.

From US/China relations and the ongoing impact of tariffs to analysis of China's push to reduce its CO2 emissions, you'll report on a wide range of stories that appeal to readers on an international scale.

This is a permanent NUJ contract and based in China.

About the role:

  • Work with other members of the China team to identify and deliver news, analysis and features
  • Work with international editors to identify and develop the best possible content
  • Produce content (text, audio, video etc.) for all GNM platforms
  • Keep international editors informed of stories in development
  • Help develop innovative techniques and styles of digital storytelling
  • Keep up to date with stories in the region and work with international editors to translate this into the best possible content
  • Work with the visuals team to ensure visual content from the China desk is relevant and compelling

About you:

  • Excellent knowledge of China and the surrounding region
  • Language skills preferred, but not essential
  • Extensive experience of working as a senior journalist ideally on a national or international website, newspaper or magazine
  • Experience of delivering exclusive, complex stories on an international scale
  • Experience contributing to podcasts and working with video and audio teams is helpful
  • Knowledge/ awareness of the demands of digital platforms
  • Proven experience of writing daily news and analytical content
  • Ideally you will have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to this role
