We are seeking an experienced reporter to join the dynamic team at the Guardian, dedicated to covering the nexus of media and power.

The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the media landscape and its intersection with the political sphere in the US. The candidate must be able to handle covering breaking daily news while juggling longer-term projects.

The media and power correspondent will focus on the evolving US media landscape, the consequences of consolidated corporate ownership of news organizations, matters of journalistic ethics and integrity, the role of media in the political landscape, and relations between media and government.

Responsibilities:

  • Research, report, and write compelling news stories, ranging from spot, daily news pieces to investigations, features and analysis pieces.
  • Balance spot news coverage with original features and analysis on technology-related topics.
  • Stay ahead of industry trends and developments to identify and pitch timely and relevant story ideas.
  • Develop and maintain a network of sources within the media sector and its regulatory agencies.
  • Collaborate with editors and other reporters to ensure comprehensive and accurate coverage.

Skills and qualifications:

  • Extensive knowledge of the media industry
  • Track record of breaking compelling public interest stories that shed light on the role of media in democracy
  • A deep understanding of the sectors' intersection with politics, in the US and elsewhere
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Excellent news judgment and ability to generate exciting and original story ideas on the most urgent and consequential media news topics
  • Commitment to editorial independence and understanding that good reporting will be both tough and fair in its coverage of the industry
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a media reporter or in a similar role.
  • Experience writing and editing media coverage for a fast-paced digital news publication
  • Ability to communicate succinctly and clearly in audio or video formats and on social platforms to amplify your written stories
  • Experience writing and editing stories in different formats and at various speeds, ranging from breaking news, to explainers, features and enterprise work.
  • Experience balancing short-term and long-term deadlines
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
