Reports to Digital editor, Guardian US
Normal location: LA or the Bay Area
Terms & conditions: Permanent, full-time, News Media Guild role. Shift pattern - some late, early and weekend work required
Purpose of role: Working with the US digital editor and wider newsroom to shape digital coverage, the Guardian US homepage, live blogs and breaking news alerts to ensure we optimize the best of the Guardian's journalism.
Salary range: $105,000-115,000
Key responsibilities & accountabilities
- Assist with running the day's digital output, working closely with the digital editor to respond in smart, imaginative ways to stories throughout the day
- Edit the Guardian US homepage to ensure it offers an up-to-the-minute showcase of the best of the Guardian's journalism
- Deputize for the digital editor
- Liaise with the Guardian's global teams, working with editors across news, features, sport and opinion, as well as design, visuals, video, audience and production teams, to ensure the best possible expression of the Guardian's digital output
- Work with digital editors in the UK and international editors in Australia to boost the impact of the Guardian's global reporting and coordinate significant news events
- Send breaking news alerts to major events
- Edit - and on occasion curate and report - live blogs in collaboration with editors and production colleagues
- Assist with digital planning and coordinate with other desks to schedule content and to ensure meticulous preparation for live events
- Ensure the Guardian's digital needs are reflected in commissioning decisions
- Understand analytics and metrics and build them into balanced editing judgments

Knowledge & experience
- Significant experience of a live newsroom, including an understanding of the unique time pressures of digital journalism
- Strong understanding of digital tools
- Experience of editing news websites and articles, including live blogs
- Good understanding of national and international news, culture and lifestyle trends
- Understanding and knowledge of analytics, search and digital audience
- Understanding of diverse audiences and how to reach them
- Clear vision of the purpose and values of the Guardian
