About our Engineering Teams

Identity Team

The Identity team is responsible for sign-in and registration across the Guardian’s website and apps. Identity Management is an exciting and evolving specialism, requiring a broad cross-section of skills with excellent opportunities to learn and grow as a developer.

Day-to-day, you might be working on anything from our frontend React app or server-side APIs, to implementing the latest in best security practice. The team’s current focus is to integrate with a 3rd party Identity Management platform, offering further opportunities to gain hands-on experience in delivering a large-scale, complex migration.

If you enjoy working on interesting problems and being part of a supportive, inclusive team dedicated to technical excellence, you will fit right in!

Targeted Experiences (TX)

Through building tools and systems, we aim to improve customer engagement, value and revenue on the platform by enabling internal teams to reach out to our readers with informative, personalised and engaging messaging.

We're currently working on the final stages of a long running project to migrate all of our data pipelines from AWS/Athena/Spark to GCP/DBT/DataProc. We then use Scala and a variety of AWS services to get this data to the right places to be used by other systems.

We're also building out React components to message our readers on www.theguardian.com as well as onboarding new slots (containers on the page) in which we can show messages.

It's an interesting team to work on because of the breadth of technologies used right across the stack. There are data engineering elements which involve working with Google BigQuery, Apache Airflow and DBT, some backend development in Scala in AWS, as well as client side work where we're working with TypeScript, React, Emotion and Source, the Guardian's design system.

It's an exciting time to join The Guardian as we're figuring out the advantages and challenges that come with hybrid working. There are a lot of interesting projects happening across different teams.
