About the role

The Guardian is seeking a creative, entrepreneurial editor with flair, vision and discerning taste to launch and lead the Filter US. This new digital consumer vertical aims to inform and inspire readers to make smart, sustainable buying decisions, and complements the existing UK-focused Filter. The editor will play a central role in hiring a small team, developing a launch strategy and overseeing a robust publishing schedule, which will be informed by both editorial judgment and audience/SEO data. It will include multiple articles per week as well as a newsletter.

The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable about shopping, product reviews and service journalism and have strong ideas for developing a unique editorial identity for the Filter US that is consistent with Guardian values. We will consider editors with a range of feature and lifestyle coverage backgrounds, but experience with affiliate marketing, audience growth strategy and new product launches is strongly preferred. This editor will work with colleagues across the organization–including audience development, marketing, finance, communications and sales to build the Filter US into a strong brand in the US.

Key responsibilities

  • Craft and oversee the editorial strategy, driven in part by reader and search interest; help recruit and then manage a small team responsible for commissioning, writing, and editing high-quality consumer-facing journalism and reviews, as well as a newsletter.
  • Develop a unique editorial voice for the Filter that's consistent with Guardian values and makes it distinct from competitors.
  • Work with teams across the Guardian - in US and UK editorial and commercial - to develop a launch plan for the project later this year.
  • Develop a content calendar tied to seasonality, tentpole commerce events and cultural events that might impact commerce, in partnership with SEO teams.
  • Edit a variety of articles and content, ensuring quality, clarity, and consistency; refer to preexisting Guardian review templates and testing methodologies but also develop new formats where necessary; and manage deadlines and editorial workflows.
  • Coach team members and help develop their writing and editorial skills; and develop a network of freelance writers
  • Collaborate with design colleagues to ensure journalistic output is visually compelling.
  • Collaborate with the Filter UK team to coordinate overall strategy as well as article launches and seasonal/tentpole pushes.
  • Implement and oversee editorial processes to ensure recommendations and reviews are up-to-date, relevant, and consistently meet standards.
  • Contribute to writing reviews and consumer articles as needed.

About you

  • Minimum of 5+ years' experience in a senior editing role in features, lifestyle, or service journalism. Experience with affiliate marketing, audience growth and new product launches strongly preferred.
  • Experience in commissioning and coaching both freelancers and staff writers through the editorial process.
  • Strong ability to collaborate with production teams (e.g. copyeditors, photo editors) to maintain editorial quality.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms, SEO, and platform-specific performance metrics for consumer journalism.
  • Effective leadership and departmental management experience, including collaborating with stakeholders across an organization.
  • Skilled in using analytics, search data, and other audience measurement tools to guide editorial decisions.
  • A demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to the role is highly desirable.
